The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is a 192 laser-beam facility recently completed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. An overview of the facility and its basic operations is provided. The National Ignition Campaign (NIC) is the bridge from basic NIF operations to a highly flexible high energy density science facility. Major elements of the NIF are reviewed. Hazards associated with NIC operations are highlighted
