Cyclotrons: from Classic to FFAG

Rick Baartman
TRIUMF

For many, the word "cyclotron" evokes an image of a magnet with a cylindrical pole and charged particles spiralling out as they accelerate from the centre of the pole gap. This seems to have little connection with Courant-Snyder parameters, high energy accelerators, or neutrino factories. I intend to make this connection. Along the way, I will show how the 500MeV, 400uA TRIUMF cyclotron design evolved, and why it is the world's largest.
