High Gradient RF Studies

Jim Norem
ANL

The Muon Collaboration has been studying low frequency copper cavities for the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment, approved (and mostly funded) at Rutherford-Appleton Lab in England. Our work has been primarily devoted to understanding the processes of breakdown and field emission in copper cavities, however many of our conclusions may also be relevant to high gradient superconducting cavities. We have a model of breakdown which makes a variety of predictions about high gradient operation which we are trying to refine and check.
