A review of existing and prospective positron sources is presented. Physical processes, positron generation is based on, are analyzed. An estimate of the yield and the longitudinal and transverse emittances for different positron sources is performed. Potential usage of solids and gas moderators as well as electron cooling in reducing the phase volume and improving accumulation of the generated positrons are studied.
