Recent Developments in Coherent Synchrotron Radiation

Robert Warnock
SLAC

Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the infrared has been observed at several synchrotron light sources, usually in recurrent short bursts. At BESSY, in a setup with low momentum compaction, steady CSR has been reported. The main features of observations are reproduced in a picture of longitudinal dynamics based on the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation and a simple model of the shielded radiation impedance. We are attempting to extend this success to more difficult problems in CSR, for instance the question of micro-bunching in bunch compressors.
