Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the infrared has been observed
at several synchrotron light sources, usually in recurrent short
bursts. At BESSY, in a setup with low momentum compaction, steady
CSR has been reported. The main features of observations are
reproduced in a picture of longitudinal dynamics based on the
Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation and a simple model of the shielded
radiation impedance. We are attempting to extend this success
to more difficult problems in CSR, for instance the question of
micro-bunching in bunch compressors.
