Image Charge/Wakefield Undulator

Yuhong Zhang
CASA, JLab

A relativistic charged particle moving very close to periodic conducting surfaces may undergo undulating motion due to its image charge force and the wakefield. Such Smith-Purcell like undulator potentially provides a new type of synchrotron light source with a moderate cost. In this seminar, we present a theoretical study of a simple two-dimensional model of an image charge/wakefield undulator. We demonstrate analytically that such undulating motion exists and the radiation associated with this motion should be observable experimentally.
